Homemade Aquavit

Homemade Aquavit at Nyhavns Færgekro

Right in the heart of historic Nyhavn – surrounded by old wooden ships and cobbled streets – you’ll find Nyhavns Færgekro. Here, we serve classic Danish food with soul and tradition. And at the centre of the experience is our very own homemade aquavit.

For more than 40 years, we’ve been distilling aquavit in our cellar brewery at Gråbrødretorv. It’s a living tradition that goes hand in hand with the food we serve – from herring platters and smørrebrød to seasonal dishes. Each bottle is made from a base of heritage recipes, wild herbs, and seasonal berries. Some varieties are soft and mellow, others sharp and aromatic – all crafted to enhance the flavour of the food and bring warmth to the table.

40 years of craftsmanship

It all started with our former brewmaster, Rigmor, who developed the first recipes with curiosity and an instinct for flavour. Her methods remain the foundation of our aquavit to this day – still guided by the seasons and what nature offers.

Our selection shifts throughout the year. We use ingredients like woodruff, St. John's wort, and yarrow – handpicked and prepared with care. There’s always a range of aquavits to choose from, and we’re confident you’ll find a favourite that pairs beautifully with your meal.

A part of the Færgekro experience

Aquavit and Danish cuisine belong together. It’s a tradition we proudly uphold – not just out of habit, but because the match is truly delicious. The right aquavit enhances a bite of herring, cuts through richness, and complements salt with subtle sweetness. It adds rhythm to the meal – and often sparks good conversation.

At Nyhavns Færgekro, we always serve a wide selection of our homemade aquavits. Around holidays like Christmas and Easter, you’ll find special seasonal blends available for a limited time only. Ask your host about today’s selection – we’re happy to share both bottles and stories.

Our aquavits are crafted to accompany classic Danish food. Take a look at our current lunch and dinner menu to see what’s being served.
