Finns Meatballs
Authentic Danish Frikadeller in the Heart of Copenhagen
The frikadelle (meatball) is perhaps the most beloved dish in Danish culinary history. At Nyhavns Færgekro, we serve classic Danish frikadeller exactly as they have been prepared for generations: Crispy on the outside, succulent on the inside, and served with creamed cabbage and potatoes—a true taste of Danish food culture.
We take immense pride in refining this classic to honor the traditions of our historic premises in the heart of Nyhavn.
A Culinary Tradition with International Recognition
To us, a frikadelle is never just a meatball. It is the result of Head Chef Finn’s meticulously developed recipe and the expert execution of our chefs. This dedication to craftsmanship recently caught the attention of the Franco-German TV channel ARTE, who visited our kitchen to film the culinary documentary Voyage en cuisine. They were searching for the most authentic Danish frikadelle—and they found it here.
The secret lies in the preparation of the meat and the frying technique. We use only the finest ingredients, mixing the meat with precision to ensure a light and airy texture. Each frikadelle is pan-fried in plenty of butter, creating that characteristic golden, crisp crust that seals in the juices.
Enjoy Frikadeller for Lunch or Dinner
For Lunch: Traditional Open-Faced Sandwiches
During lunch, we serve our frikadeller as a "smørrebrød" staple. It’s all about the balance between the warm, pan-fried meat and fresh toppings. We present them on hearty rye bread with classic accompaniments: crisp pickled cucumber for acidity and homemade red cabbage for depth and sweetness. It is the ideal lunch for anyone seeking the authentic taste of Denmark.
For Dinner: The Full Tavern Experience
As evening falls and the "hygge" settles in our historic rooms, we serve the frikadeller as a satisfying main course. They are accompanied by our popular creamed cabbage, prepared with a rich béchamel sauce and seasoned with nutmeg for the perfect creamy consistency. Served alongside small, tender potatoes, this is Danish comfort food at its very best
